The film is based on “The Tragedy of Man” (1861) by Imre Madách. The unique aspect of this adaptation is that it is entirely performed by children. The film begins with the biblical story of Adam and Eve, who, having succumbed to Lucifer’s temptation, are cast out of the Garden of Eden. Plot: In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve are deceived by Lucifer into tasting the “Forbidden Fruit”. As a result, they are expelled from paradise. Adam holds Lucifer to his promise, reminding him that “You said I would know everything!”. So Lucifer grants Adam a dream of the world to come. In this dream, Adam becomes various historical figures in different eras, including Djoser in Egypt, Miltiades in Athens, a wealthy Roman during the time of Jesus Christ, a knight called Tancred in Byzantium, Johannes Kepler in Prague, Danton in revolutionary Paris, and a nameless suitor in Victorian London. Guided by a deceptively sweet but ultimately contemptuous Lucifer, Adam confronts an endless procession of the
horror of the human story involving betrayal, savagery, mindless cruelty and fanaticism. Review: The film is praised for its surreal account of the history of humanity as portrayed entirely by children between the ages of 8 and 12. The director’s choice to use children for all roles adds complexity and a poetic vision to the plot. The film is described as having a dream-like atmosphere with several amazing surreal scenes. However, some viewers may find the pacing deliberate and lacking in captivating atmosphere at times. Despite this, the brilliant photography enhances the overall viewing experience. Production: The film was shot against the backdrop of fields, forests, mesas and shores of southern Hungary. The cinematography was handled by Béla Ferenczy and Sándor Kardos while Margit Galamb and Zsuzsa Pósán took care of editing. The music for the film was composed by István Márta. The film was distributed by Award Films and was released on 20 September 1984.
