8h01.com“Cekani na Dest” is a 1978 Czechoslovak film directed by Karel Kachyna. The film is a sensitive examination of a child’s-eye view, forming one of many of Kachyna’s films in which the director examines the world through the eyes of
young protagonists. The film was shot in Prague’s Bohnice housing estate, which was almost deserted at the time as most children and adults were still on vacation. The film revolves around twelve-year-old Alena, portrayed by Dita Kaplanová, who has had to leave the countryside on a blazing hot summer day and come back home to a block of flats on the outskirts of Prague. She spends most of the day on her own, amusing herself by daydreaming and imagining, on the blazing hot building roof awaiting the rain. Her mother is at work all day and her friends are still away on holidays. Alena is keen on an actor named Budil and puts on her best clothes for him each day, running out onto the street carrying her mother’s handbag. She also befriends a
young soldier from a neighboring balcony. The only pleasant moments she experiences are in the company of a blind invalid named Taraba, who is going to the hospital and entrusts her with his German Shepherd dog. The film also explores Alena’s relationship with her mother’s boyfriend, who she dislikes. There is no one she can confide in or who can cheer her up, so she welcomes Taraba’s suggestion to celebrate his return from the hospital. While shopping, Alena meets a soldier named Pavel and escorts him to the station the next day, where her hope for first emotional awakening collapses when Pavel’s girlfriend appears. Alena is once again left alone. Towards the end of the film, Alena finds out that Taraba was hit by a car and is back in the hospital. This is bad news, but with it comes something everyone has been subconsciously waiting for - rain. The anxiously awaited rains permit Alena to momentarily forget the complicated adult world, with which she is having her first contact.
