The film is loosely based on the Letters of a Portuguese Nun attributed to Mariana Alcoforado. The film starred Susan Hemingway and William Berger. Franco co-wrote the screenplay with producer Dietrich. The film is part of a genre known as “nunsploitation”. The film tells the story of Maria, a 16-year-old girl living in Inquisition-era Portugal. One day, while cavorting with a boy, she is seen by a priest who orders her to become a nun as penance for her actions. In the convent, Maria is subjected to all sorts of
torture and humiliation at the hands of the priest and the mother superior. The film’s narrative unfolds in a dramatic fashion, with Maria’s innocence and naivety being exploited by those in power. She perceives a feverish
lesbian atmosphere within the convent walls, which she innocently believes to be her own sexual fantasies, leading to further guilt. Later, her boyfriend sneaks into the monastery to take her home, but Maria refuses, believing she must find purification. However, Maria writes a letter to her mother saying that she would accept his offer the next time he comes. The letter is intercepted, and Maria is summoned by the abbess and Father Vincent. She is threatened with isolation if she repeats her actions, she will lose her religious habit and be locked in a closet. Then she must give
oral satisfaction to the father. One night, she is brought to the center of a
black mass that summons Satan who deflowers Maria. Upon waking from this nightmare, she realizes the injustice of her situation. She escapes from the convent and turns to the mayor for help. But he does not believe her and returns her to the convent. This escape attempt is again punished. She is brought before the inquisitor to whom she confesses everything and accuses those in charge of the convent. Because of her confession, she is sentenced to death at the stake.
