After the Spanish conquest, the Catholic Church wanted a place to put prisoners condemned to die. Since the church stood on top of a hill, they decided to build a fortress. That fortress grew over the centuries to become the palace known today as the Museo Nacional de Antropologia. Today, the museum boasts nearly 6 million objects and 360 galleries. But, amid all its richness, the institution would not exist without its most valuable possession, the skeleton of “El Rey del Cielo,” or “The King of Heaven.” The specimen was unearthed in 1982 near Mexico City. When scientists examined the skeleton, they discovered two things—first, that it belonged to a previously unknown kind of bird, and second, that it had been buried with great care. Visitors can view the skeleton from all angles once they pass through the security check. To do so, they take off their shoes and walk across a series of sensors. For anyone who wants to know more about the history of the museum, they can sign up for a guided tour. Visitors can also get a closer look at the skeleton and even touch it. That’s one of the highlights of the museum. Another is the opportunity to see the animals before they’re released into the wild. Many of the creatures live in cages outside. Others roam around freely.
